Location: Nutrient Data Laboratory
Project Number: 8040-52000-065-04-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement
Start Date: Sep 3, 2013
End Date: Mar 2, 2015
The objective is to determine valid and reproducible laboratory quantitative outcomes for measuring parent vitamin D and 25(OH)D in dietary supplements and a variety of animal-based food matrices, among a range of analytical laboratories.
ARS will conduct tasks related to the design, development, conduct, and compilation/summary of results of an inter-laboratory trial measuring parent vitamin D and 25(OH)D in specific foods and dietary supplements among a group of laboratories which currently perform these analyses. A roundtable group of approximately 4-5 persons with relevant expertise shall be established to identify and critically evaluate scientific issues. Input from the roundtable members shall be sought and utilized throughout the project. ARS will prepare 5 or 6 common samples of foods and supplements and will secure the participation of at least 5 labs to analyze these samples for vitamins D3, D2, and 25OHD using mass spectrometry methods. ARS will obtain detailed documentation for the methods used and results obtained from each lab. Collection, arrangement, and summary of data collected during the trial shall be carried out by USDA and compiled into a Final Project Report which will include data results, laboratory methods, summary, conclusions, research gaps and recommendations.
