Create eastern winter wheat populations segregating for FHB resistance QTL, generate doubled haploid lines and distribute them to all participating breeding programs. Identify and characterize allelic variants at major developmental loci to determine affect of these genes on FHB resistance.
Parents of populations will be selected from lines in the Uniform Scab Nurseries, breeding lines from individual programs, or scab resistant varieties with known resistance QTL. F1 plants that combine well-characterized and new QTL will be used for production of double haploid lines. Selected single cross F1s will be topcrossed with parents that confer adaptation appropriate for each of the regional populations. Large populations with multiple FHB resistance QTL which also contain desirable alleles at developmental loci will be targeted. F1 individuals will be genotyped with markers diagnostic for FHB resistance QTL, plant height, photoperiod and vernalization loci. Analyses will be done to develop markers for vernalization, photoperiod and alternate dwarfing genes in diverse winter wheat germplasm.
