Research Project: Creating a HapMap Resource Population of Cattle and Goats from Nigeria

Location: Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-31000-104-19-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 2, 2013
End Date: Aug 31, 2015

A goal of ARS is to develop a resource population of genomic DNA samples representing a diverse set of locally adapted breeds from Nigeria. These goat and cattle samples will be integrated into a much larger overall project to create an African HapMap population of samples to phylogentically evaluate the relatedness and diversity of native goat and cattle populations of Africa. The Cooperator has the expertise and infrastructure to access local germplasm for sampling and authority to grant exportation of these samples for experiments that evaluate genome composition.

The Cooperator will acquire up to 1000 genomic DNA samples representing locally adapted breeds of goat and cattle from Nigeria and possibly other neighboring regions. These samples will be used by ARS along with many other samples to evaluate diversity of cattle and goat breeds throughout Africa. The Cooperator will be supplied with a summary of the data and a copy of the dataset generated from analysis of their samples.
