Research Project: Optimal Dietary Energy and Protein for the Development of Gilts

Location: Reproduction Research

Project Number: 3040-31000-091-06-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2013
End Date: Dec 15, 2016

The overall objective of this project is to determine the dietary energy and protein that is optimal for gilt development and sow lifetime productivity to 3rd parity.

This project will be done in collaboration with a commercial collaborator and Iowa State University, and other members of the Sow Lifetime Productivity Research Consortium of the National Pork Board. Funding is for a postdoc to support two sequential National Pork Board funded projects. The experiments will test the effects of high, normal and low energy diets and normal and low lysine levels on gilt development and sow lifetime productivity to third parity. Data collected will include feet and leg scores, growth, feed intake, estrous cyclicity, uterine and ovarian weights, mammary gland development, and first, second and third parity production information. The postdoc will help with data collection, management, and analysis and will help with interim and final reports and development of manuscripts from both projects. This subaward is for the first year of a postdoc to extend to up to three years depending on availability of funding from NPB.
