To develop image processing algorithms for automatic detection of defects in apples and pickling cucumbers using spectral and color imaging techniques.
Algorithms and computer programs will be developed for automatic detection and segregation of defective apples from color images acquired using the online imaging system developed by ARS researchers at East Lansing, Michigan. Color images for different types of defective fruit will be collected and analyzed for effective extraction of features for defects classification. Spectral image database for different types of surface and internal defects in pickling cucumbers will be collected, which will then be used for developing alogrithms for automatic segregation of normal and defective cucumbers. The defects detection algorithms will be integrated into the computer imaging-based inspection systems for automatic sorting and grading of apples and pickling cucumbers. Tests will be performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the defects detection algorithms in real-time quality sorting and grading of apples and pickling cucumbers.
