Location: Food Components and Health Laboratory
Project Number: 8040-51000-052-11-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement
Start Date: Oct 1, 2012
End Date: Sep 30, 2013
The objective of this agreement is to confirm biological effects of garlic intake on cancer risk. A previous human feeding study showed effects of garlic on physiologic pathways related to cancer and those results will be tested in cell models to confirm the effects and test isolated garlic compounds to determine which compounds provide the expected health benefits.
Conduct a series cell culture studies to mimic the human feeding trial. Cells similar to those obtained in the human study will be incubated with garlic extract. Gene expression, which represents the first step in adjustment of physiologic processes, will be assessed after incubation, and the results will be compared to those from the ARS human study.
