Project Number: 8080-21000-024-31-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 15, 2013
End Date: Aug 14, 2018
The objectives of this project include: 1) determine optimal release vehicle for attracting the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) to specific locations; 2) quantify retention duration of BMSB responding to olfactory stimuli deployed in or near apple trees; 3) quantify the capacity of insecticide residues of various ages to kill BMSB responding to olfactory stimuli; and 4) perform season-long evaluation of an attract-and-kill strategy compared with a conventional program for BMSB in commercial apple orchards.
The BMSB has emerged as an extremely destructive pest of tree fruit throughout the mid-Atlantic. The intent of this work will be to develop effective management tools for the BMSB in apple orchards. The work will be conducted in collaboration with affected commercial growers.
