The proposed project is to develop a new remote sensing and biophysical modeling approach for detecting agricultural lands in semi-arid regions and quantifying effects of climate, crop and soil types, and irrigation efficiencies upon water consumed.

The research will implemented in four main parts: (1) development of a new, integrated satellite and model-based approach for detecting irrigated agriculture in arid lands; (2) development of derived satellite-based observations needed for implementation of a water-use biophysical model; (3) refine, validate, and expand biophysical modeling results from multiple local sites in the United States and Israel to be applied over large scales; and (4) utilize results from step 3 to evaluate the implications for future agricultural production based on realistic scenarios for climate and land use changes.
