Research Project: Innovative Approaches to Capture Air Pollutant Emissions from Poultry Operations

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-66000-001-03-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2013
End Date: Jun 30, 2018

The purpose of this project is 1) to demonstrate at commercial broiler sites that properly designed vegetative environmental buffers combined with acid scrubbers on exhaust fans can efficiently mitigate ammonia, particulate matter, and volatile organic compound emissions, and 2) to participate in stakeholder outreach activities.

The Cooperator will select several poultry production sites that will have established vegetative environmental buffers or installed scrubbers or both. Ammonia, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds will be measured during a series of sampling campaigns conducted while implementing an NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant. Data will be used in dispersion models to determine the effectiveness of both mitigation strategies. Results will be presented at producer meetings and at various outreach activities.
