Soybean yields are affected quantitatively and qualitatively by diseases that result from interactions between host plants and fungi, insects, nematodes, and viruses. Disease severity is influenced by pathogen virulence genes, associated microorganisms and host genes for resistance or susceptibility. The objectives of this cooperative project are to identify and characterize novel biological agents that reduce the virulence of soybean pathogens/pests and identify regions of the chromosomes of annual and perennial soybean germplasm accessions that are associated with pathogen or pest resistance.
Potential virulence-reducing organisms will be identified through metagenomic analysis of pathogen and pest populations in culture and from the field. The effects of the agents on virulence will be confirmed through phenotypic evaluations of pathogen/pest populations employing artificial inoculations with the biological agent(s). Chromosomal regions of annual and perennial soybean germplasm accessions that are associated with pathogen/pest resistance will be identified through molecular genetic and phenotypic analyses of plant populations derived from germplasm lines differing in their susceptibility to pathogens/pests.
