1. RHEM development and testing for disturbed conditions. A. Test Infiltration and sheet/splash erodibility parameterization algorithms. 2. Assess the effects of improved snow representations within CEAP modeling tools.
Objective 1: Infiltration, concentrated flow hydraulics, and erosion algorithms integrated into RHEM/DRHEM will be tested using existing rainfall simulation data from sites across the Great Basin. The ability of RHEM/DRHEM to predict the effects of disturbances on infiltration, runoff, and erosion from splash-sheet and concentrated flow processes will be evaluated using independent datasets. Where appropriate, RHEM/DRHEM parameters for infiltration, runoff and erosion by sheet-splash indicative of the effects of conservation practices and disturbances (i.e., burning, tree removal by cutting and mastication, annual grass invasions) will be developed based on extensive existing database of field measurements. Objective 2: The effects of improved snow representations within CEAP tools (e.g. APEX, SWAT, KINEROS2) will be assessed by comparing models forced with basic topographic/vegetation discretizations and standard precipitation inputs to models with snow-informed discretizations and distributed snowmelt forcings. This analysis will use several years of existing watershed-scale data on meteorological, snow accumulation, and streamflow patterns associated with areas with varying juniper density and removal strategies.
