On Washington soft white wheat, perform Falling Number measurements to characterize the repeatability and reproducibility precision of the instrument and procedure under highly controlled laboratory conditions. Secondly characterize the sampling error of the Falling Number procedure for harvested wheat delivered to primary sales points. From repeatability and sampling error characterizations, devise changes to the instrument, the method, or the sampling regime in order to improve the robustness of the method.
Obtain Falling Number apparatus, purchased by Washington Grain Commission and loaned to the ARS Beltsville laboratory. In addition to the loaning of apparatus, the Washington Grain Commission agrees to supply soft white wheat samples when requested by the ARS Beltsville laboratory. The Laboratory will perform precision and sampling error studies to first characterize the Falling Number procedure, a procedure that is codified in the Approved Methods of AACC.
