The research proposed for 2013 will focus on characterization of the F7 recombinant inbred population of STV474(F) X PHY72(M) and the further development of the NM67(F) X PHY72(M) population. The proposed research will evaluate the underlying biochemical reasons for observed differences in stress tolerance and fiber quality.

The STV474(F) X PHY72(M) recombinant populations will be characterized in greenhouse and field studies. Drought stress responses on yield and fiber quality will be determined. DNA harvested from F7 plants will be used for QTL analyses. Lint samples will be harvested and analyzed by the Lubbock Classing Office. Initial findings from the 2012 research showed significant diversity within this F7 RIL population for yield, rooting characteristics, responses to water deficits, and fiber quality. A replicated trial is needed to obtain sufficient data for release of this population to the cotton community.
