Research Project: Hydrodeoxygenation of biomass pyrolysis oil for use as refinery blendstock

Location: Sustainable Biofuels and Co-products Research

Project Number: 8072-41000-095-18-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2013
End Date: Aug 31, 2015

The objective is to promote co-operation on basic and applied research on the following issues: 1. Pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass into bio-oil as a replacement for crude oil. 2. Upgrading and stabilization of bio-oil into a suitable blendstock 3. Refining and blending of upgraded bio-oil into commodity products 4. Commercialization of commodity products based on biomass pyrolysis oil

Scientists at ARS laboratories in Wyndmoor, PA will conduct pyrolysis on biomass to produce crude bio-oil. ARS will also conduct hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) upgrading experiments, as well as some characterization of the HDO product. Characterization methods include chromatography, elemental, moisture, and acidity analyses. Scientists at ARG will test the applicability of upgraded pyrolysis oil. Some tests include corrosion analysis, octane/cetane numbers, viscosity, cloud point, and GC simulated distillation.
