Research Project: Analysis of Sex Pheromone-Based Mating Disruption Mechanisms in Navel Orangeworm

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality Research

Project Number: 2034-43000-038-05-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2013
End Date: Jul 1, 2015

Objective:
Use lab and field experiment to discern possible mechanisms leading mating disruption of navel orangeworm (NOW).

Approach:
NOW males will be exposed to ZZ-16:Ald and the full 4-component pheromone blend for one hour as a steady stream or pulsed exposures and subsequently tested for responsiveness to female sex pheromone. Also in the field female pheromone sources will be observed and video recorded to observe male responses when the female source is surrounded by synthetic pheromone sources.
