Develop a production method of a live attenuated Edwardsiella ictaluri vaccine for commercial use in the catfish industry.
Cooperator will provide attenuated vaccine, medium, associated supplies and technical support to the USDA, ARS National Biological Control Laboratory (NBCL) for the purpose of scale-up production of this vaccine in 10, 50 and 100 L fermenters. Fermentation data such as propeller speed, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH are monitored at the set time frequency and then saved to the workstation for future data analysis. Fermented cultures will be transported to National Warmwater Aquaculture Center (NWAC) facilities and each batch tested for cell density, freeze thaw tolerance, safety and efficacy. Vaccine serials will be produced by NWAC fish health program using established protocols. Tests evaluating quality control, safety and efficacy will be conducted by MSU-MAFES personnel at NWAC, per protocols that meet USDA licensure standards pursuant to the VST Act 1913.
