1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
· To create and maintain cooperative working relationships to strengthen technology transfer for agricultural needs · To support the SC2 economic development initiative in Fresno, California and other regional initiatives · To create regular communications between scientists at DOE and ARS that focus on technology transfer · To focus on water management challenges faced by our stakeholders · To collaborate on solutions for challenges faced by water managers · To enhance and expedite commercialization of products from the two laboratories · To support the development of new agricultural technology businesses · To serve as a catalyst for development and deployment of agricultural technology · To support the broadband infrastructure and other infrastructure needed by agriculture technology · To collaborate with other research institutions as appropriate that wish to join this MOU by addendum subject to approval of the three Parties
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Working together to support renewed economic growth through innovation in the food and agricultural sector in Fresno, California, the San Joaquin Valley, and throughout California. Working together to support the SC2 initiative in Fresno and other regional initiatives in California. Collaboration between the DOE and USDA ARS is an opportunity to leverage two of California’s core strengths, technology and agriculture, towards greater agricultural innovation, productivity, and development of an agriculture technology economic cluster centered on the heart of California agriculture, Fresno and the San Joaquin Valley.
3. Progress Report:
The Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Energy and United States Department of Agriculture supports objective 1 of the in-house cris project on Developing Sustainable Cropping Systems to Improve Water Productivity and Protect Water and Soil Quality in Irrigated Agriculture. Preparations have been made to present two projects at the ARS – City of Fresno Water Technology Showcase to be held in August, 2013. Conference calls were made between Pacific West Area office technology transfer office and researchers for planning for the event. Scientists in the unit met to plan for making displays to enhance the technology transfer activities.
