Research Project: Molecular and Morphological Systematics of African Grapholitini (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

Location: Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Project Number: 1245-22000-264-09-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 13, 2013
End Date: May 21, 2014

The objective of this cooperative research project is: 1) to develop morphological and DNA-based hypotheses of relationships (phylogeny) for moths pests from southern Africa; 2) to investigate the use of DNA sequence data to diagnose these species; and 3) produce tools that can be used to identify potential pests of agricultural concern.

Staff from the Systematic Entomology Laboratory (SEL), ARS and Rhodes University will collect samples of southern African moths, both in the field and from various museums. Rhodes University staff will extract, sequence, and analyze DNA from these samples for use in ongoing systematic studies of moth pests, including analyses of phylogenetic relationships and diagnosis of species. Results and data will be shared with SEL and made available to the scientific community.
