SUGIMURA--To develop a version of the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) watershed model code to run in parallel on a supercomputer. This will reduce run times by orders of magnitude and allow simulation of the entire island of Maui with increased spatial detail. It will also allow increased spatial detail and improved calibration and scenario analysis of national scale CEAP (Conservation Effects Assessment Project) policy simulations. CROW--Quantify growth of candidate biofuel plant species and water requirements for Maui to provide guidance on the optimal system to produce biofuel for the Office of Naval Research.

SUGIMURA--Two approaches will be tested in this project. The first approach will parallelize the input files for routing of subbasins. In other words, each subbasin will be an individual SWAT simulation and will be run in parallel by stream order. The second approach will be to modularize and parallelize the SWAT code. SWAT is currently written is FORTAN and the code will be modified to use new modular structures in FORTAN and modified to run sections of code in parallel. Different blocks of code will be executed on different processors, taking advantage of tens of thousands of processors on a supercomputer. After the model is recoded, the water resources of the entire island of Maui will be simulated on the Hawaii supercomputer and increases in run time will be analyzed. We will also compare the efficiency of both approaches and suggest ways to improve run time efficiencies. CROW--Parameterize the ALMANAC model for the most promising plant species on Maui to optimize production and water use. This will involve field measurements of above-ground and below-ground plant processes.
