Research Project: Mycoplasma Bovis in Farmed Bison: Analysis of the Epidemiology and Virulence Traits of an Emerging Bison Pathogen

Location: Ruminant Diseases and Immunology Research

Project Number: 5030-32000-105-05-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2013
End Date: Apr 30, 2017

Objective:
Objective of work to be done at NADC is shotgun sequencing, library building, and initial assembly and annotation of up to 8 bison isolates of Mycoplasma bovis; comparison with cattle isolates to facilitate rational design of vaccines and diagnostics.

Approach:
Shotgun sequencing will be completed via pyrosequencing and long-read sequencing chemistry reagents. Draft assemblies will be created using the Newbler assembly or by MIRA (Mimicking Intelligent Read Assembly), as warranted. Annotation approaches include RAST, Glimmer3 and the Artemis genome viewer with BLAST searches.
