1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
To devise innovative methods for the suppression of insects that transmit diseases to U.S. military deployed abroad.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Identify and test compounds with insecticidal activity that makes them especially beneficial in the rapid control of mosquitoes, flies, and other arthopods responsible for carrying disease agent. Devise innovative means of applying control agents especially suited for use in combat or deployment conditions. Identify and test new classes of topical and area repellents for use by troops.
3. Progress Report:
This is a new project that is a sister, overlapping project to 6202-22000-028-13R, which expired in FY 2013. This project is being conducted under the DoD Deployed WarFighter Protection Program. The goal of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of sprayers and methods used to make adult and barrier treatments for control of pests in military settings, and to evaluate field methods employed to determine effectiveness of these applied sprays. In FY 2013, work focused on study definition and protocol development, which involved intensive interactions with and input from appropriate DoD personnel. Work in FY 2013 also included the design and construction of spray evaluation techniques and development of a test stand that complies with established World Health Organization protocols. As work by this project continues, important new knowledge will be gained to facilitate protection of personnel in military environments from pest insects and the diseases they transmit.
