To discover and develop efficacious oral and intraperitoneal (IP) vaccines and to screen novel adjuvant/immunomodulator products for activities that may be efficacious individually or in combinations for control of Streptococcus agalactiae disease in aquaculture.
ARS will provide Streptococcus (S.) agalactiae (Honduras strain) to the cooperator. The cooperator will formulate and produce oral and intraperitoneal (IP) vaccines of inactivated S. agalactiae. The oral vaccines will be produced by novel microsphere technologies that will protect the vaccine antigens against adverse environment conditions, such as the digestion system. ARS will evaluate the oral vaccine products to determine their ability to elicit protective immunity. ARS will provide maintenance and care of the fish, perform experiments, and prepare progress report to Zoetis. Zoetis will develop a number (40) of adjuvant/immunomodulator products. ARS will in vitro screen these adjuvant/immunomodulator products to determine whether they have potential use in commercial products for aquaculture. Both ARS and the cooperator will prepare publications/presentations jointly.
