This project will integrate the Two-Source Energy Balance Snow (TSEBS) model in the Atmosphere-Land Exchange Inverse (ALEXI) modeling framework, which is currently applied using weather satellite data over the continental U.S. for monitoring evapotranspiration and drought under snow-free conditions. The TSEBS land surface scheme will allow the operational ALEXI modeling system to be applied over snow-covered regions, which currently are masked or removed from the analysis. This will offer the capability to monitor and assess water availability in the soil root zone and near-surface layer more accurately for different seasons and to assess water balance on annual cycles, providing better estimates of crop growth, yield and assessment of impacts of drought for areas having water supplies provided primarily by snowmelt. This encompasses much of the Western U.S.
The Cooperator has developed a snow model capable of simulating surface fluxes and snowmelt rates. The Two Source Energy Balance Model Modified for Snow (TSEBS) has been tested with ground truth data collected at an ARS mountainous watershed. Model comparisons with ground truth measurements of surface fluxes have shown reasonably good agreement and encouraging results. The Cooperator will work with the ARS to implement the TSEBS within the operational ALEXI modeling system over CONUS U.S.
