2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Evaluate and refine thermal-based two-source remote sensing models and tools for quantifying water use (evapotranspiration) and root zone water availability and stress of vineyards for improved water management while maintaining grape productivity and quality.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Conduct intensive field experiments collecting evapotranspiration (ET), root zone soil moisture, and biophysical data in concert with high resolution aircraft remote sensing imagery provided by the Cooperator. The remote sensing imagery from aircraft and satellite sensors will be used to evaluate and refine remote-sensing-based ET models for quantifying vineyard water use and vine stress/condition at different vine physiological stages. The high resolution aircraft imagery will be used to distinguish vine and cover crop contributions to total water use and root zone water availability as well as the capability of using coarser resolution satellite data with thermal sharpening techniques to provide separate vine and cover crop contributions to total ET.

3. Progress Report:
Utah State University cooperators are currently planning the collection of high resolution airborne imagery over the two vineyard field sites (young and mature Pinot Noir vineyards) for the second Intensive Observation Period (IOP) planned for mid June, 2013. This follows imagery collected during the first IOP having an actively transpiring cover crop in the interrow, and relatively dormant (pre leaf emergence) vine canopy. The second IOP will have vines at peak biomass/leaf area, possibly under deficit irrigation to minimize further growth, with a cover crop going through senescence. Ground collection will include measurements of surface energy fluxes and evapotranspiration from two eddy covariance towers, vine sap flow, profile soil moisture and leaf area measurements in the mature and young vineyard field sites. Processing of the aircraft imagery is underway.
