Research Project: Genetic Enhancement of Dry Bean for Improved Production on Degraded Soils

Location: Grain Legume Genetics Physiology Research

Project Number: 2090-21220-001-03-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 15, 2013
End Date: Mar 14, 2018

Use plant breeding to develop dry bean lines with better performance on degraded soils in Feed the Future countries including Haiti, Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania.

Collections of bean accessions will be screened under low fertility, drought, root rot, and related stresses. Promising materials will be used in crossing to introduce stress tolerance into native landrace and improved dry bean cultivars representing typical market classes in each country. Graduate students from the respective countries will be trained in plant breeding and genetics and soil fertility.
