Research Project: Production of Environmentally Friendly PHA Biopolymers from Waste BioGas Derived from Agriculturally-Derived Solid Waste Streams

Location: Bioproducts Research

Project Number: 2030-41000-058-03-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 15, 2012
End Date: Jun 14, 2017

To produce environmentally friendly Poly(Hydroxy-Alkanoate) (PHA) biopolymers from waste biogas, thus producing commercially-viable PHA blends that can be thermoformed into products. Commercial validation of the Mango Materials is to be demonstrated at scale using biogas from various sources, including ag-derived feedstocks, MSW, or wastewater-derived methane. Use of waste biogas from anaerobic digestion decreases the cost of raw feedstocks required to make Mango Materials’ bioplastics.

A bioreactor system will be set-up at ARS and maintained by Mango using methane and/or waste biogas to produce PHA. ARS and Mango will work jointly to assess the potential commercial viability of this process by testing fermentation conditions and by determining the quality and end-use mechanical properties of the biopolymers produced.
