Research Project: In Vitro and In Vivo Assessment of Iron Bioavailability of Biofortified Transgenic Sorghum

Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 1907-42520-004-05-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2012
End Date: Aug 30, 2013

Objective:
The objective of this work will be to assess Fe bioavailability from lines transgenic sorghum generated by Pioneer Seeds. These lines have been designed to be low in phytic acid, a known inhibitor of Fe absorption. We will determine if Fe bioavailability in these lines is enhanced by lower phytate levels.

Approach:
Using our established cell culture tools and an animal model (poultry), we will evaluate the Fe bioavailability in sorghum.
