The objective is to promote co-operation on basic and applied research on the following issues: 1. Catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass residues to produce bio-oil with low oxygen content; 2. Catalytic pyrolysis of non-edible acidic vegetable oil residues to produce hydrocarbon-based biofuels and chemicals; 3. Catalytic hydrogenation of bio-oil and model compounds to produce hydrocarbon-based biofuels and chemicals 4. Catalytic cracking and hydrogenation of non-edible acidic vegetable oil residues to produce hydrocarbon-based fuels and chemicals; Additional objective is to promote exchange of faculty and research staff members, technicians and students; promote lectures, seminars and other educational activities. UFPE seeks to promote the establishment and consolidation of scientific and technical partnership with the Eastern Regoinal Research Center (ARS/USDA) for future new projects.

Scientists from UFPE will spend time at ARS laboratories in Wyndmoor, PA to carry out bench or pilot scale experiments, using catalysts prepared by UFPE. Experiments will include pyrolysis of lignocellulosic or non-edible vegetable oil biomass residues; cracking or hydrogenation of bio-oil or vegetable oils. Feedstock for these studies can come from Brazilian biomass resources including agricultural residues such as sugarcane bagasse and leaves, non-edible vegetable oil residues. Pyrolysis conversion approach will include analytical characterization by chromatography. Scale-up and commercialization of these technologies based on the Brazilian feedstock will be explored using ASPEN simulations and techno-economic analyses.
