Research Project: Document and Construction of a Production AC-DC EPG Monitor for Commercialization

Location: Crop Diseases, Pests and Genetics Research

2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Document and construct an AC-DC production Electrial Penetration Graph (EPG) monitor.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Develop complete documentation for assembly of the AC-DC Electrical Penetration Graph patented technology, through construction, evaluation and optimization of a production monitor for commercialization.

3. Progress Report:
This research is in support of Objective 3 of the in-house project (determine biological/ecological/transmission properties of Xylella fastidiosa [Xf]) by improving the technology of electrical penetration graph (EPG) monitors critical to performance of this objective. This year, EPG Technologies, Inc. completed re-design of the USDA-patented AC-DC EPG prototype monitor into a production-version, commercially marketable monitor. EPG Technologies has also re-designed the power supply. ARS scientists have iteratively advised EPG Technologies in modifying the design to correct problems with an earlier prototype. Test versions of the production monitor and power supply have been built. Preliminary EPG recordings with blue-green sharpshooters have been performed by ARS scientists. Final evaluation of the production monitor, with blue-green sharpshooters, glassy-winged sharpshooters, pea aphids and potato psyllids, will begin in July and be completed by the end of September 2013.
