Research Project: Development of High Yielding Soybean Cultivars and Germplasm with Higher Seed Protein Content and/or Improved Amino Acid Composition

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6070-21220-068-43-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2014
End Date: Dec 31, 2016

Develop genetic and molecular tools that will facilitate breeding soybean cultivars and germplasm with higher seed protein content and/or improved amino acid composition.

Breeding programs from seven states will work in close collaboration to gain a better understanding of the underlying genetic mechanisms that control protein content and amino acid composition in soybean seed and to incorporate this knowledge into applied breeding programs that target a wide range of maturity groups. Specific activities will include: extensive field testing of advanced high protein lines, phenotyping and genotyping of mapping populations developed to identify loci that affect protein content and/or protein composition, linkage mapping analysis and germplasm exchange.
