To investigate the potential for real-time operational production of a drought product (based on satellite-derived evapotranspiration (ET) over the North American continent.
Assemble a prototype archive of ET maps for North America for 2000-present. Compute standardized temporal anomalies in the ratio of actual-to-potential (ET) – this forms a normalized ET-based drought index, with negative values indicating drier-than average moisture conditions. Evaluate the ET drought product with respect to standard drought indicators and with drought classifications in the North American Drought Monitor. In addition, the ET drought product will be quantitatively compared with NASS county-level crop condition and soil moisture datasets. Develop a demonstration multi-scale drought monitoring tool integrating satellite data at multiple spatial resolutions, enabling assessment at field to continental scales.
