1. To develop molecular tools that can aid in predicting outcome of traditional breeding of anthuriums. 2. To transform anthurium with genes that confer resistance to bacteria and nematodes 3. To evaluate anthurium lines for resistance or tolerance to nematodes. 4. To do advanced evaluation of anthurium lines that show tolerance to bacteria. 5. Initiate efforts to develop approaches for developing orchids that are resistant to insects, such as thrips.
Pigments and the genes associated with producing color in anthurium will be characterized to help the genetic engineering process for developing anthurium with novel color traits. Vectors with genes for conferring resistance or tolerance to nematodes or bacteria will be engineered and used in transformation experiments with selected anthurium cultivars. Transgenic plant will be characterized and screened for resistance or tolerance to nematodes or bacteria. Promising lines will be further tested and advanced for eventual commercialization. Initial efforts will be started to develop orchids that are resistant to insects. Log 46968.
