The objectives of this proposal are to test refinements of this breeding procedures to effectively use G. soja in soybean breeding and to apply it to 40 of the most genetically diverse wild soybeans to produce an abundant source of new genetic diversity for variety improvement.
The authors of this proposal have developed a new breeding approach with the potential to make the diversity of wild soybean available for variety development. By growing very large F2 populations from crosses of soybean by wild soybean, screening the resulting harvest for seed size, and selecting for upright plants in the F3 generation, we identified over 200 lines that yielded between 50 and 100% of the soybean parent and collectively contained all of 558 DNA markers that were found to differ between the soybean and wild soybean parents. While this intense selection generally reduced the wild soybean-derived DNA markers, approximately 10% of the wild soybean DNA markers were favored by this selection and these markers were associated with increased yield, larger seed size, higher seed oil or protein concentration and improved lodging. These results indicate that wild soybean carries many agronomically important genes and that these genes were successfully transferred to soybean. In this research we will compare this breeding procedures with two modifications to identify the most effective means of introgressing useful genetic diversity from wild soybean to soybean and apply these procedures to as many as 40 soybean by wild soybean populations to develop higly selected, genotypically characterized derived lines.
