To evaluate the extent of strain-induced crystallization present in guayule rubber (compared to Hevea-based NR and synthetics).
The approach will be to: 1) Prepare films of guayule natural rubber in the unvulcanized and vulcanized states, varying by composition of non-rubber constituents. 2) Measure physical and chemical properties related to composition and end-use performance. 3) Perform detailed studies of the rate and extent of strain-induced crystallization by synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). This part of the project will leverage SUNY’s expertise and access to the Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
