1) Evaluate the independent and combined effects of alternative management practices, including cover crops and companion crops, on net primary productivity and water quality in the upper Mississippi river basin (UMRB) 2) Establish well-informed stakeholder groups within the four regions of the UMRB that can frame research objectives and participate in reiterative dialogue; 3) Proactively engage educators at the outset of the research program.
The proposed research project will establish field plots in paired mini-watersheds at the UW-Platteville Pioneer farm and at the University of Minnesota's Rosemount Research and Outreach Center. The treatments will include conventional corn/soybean roations, as well as permanent living mulche plots, using kura clover, in which corn will be planted. All components of the water balance in each plot will be monitored, with particular emphasis on nitrogen and phosphorus losses. A primary focus of this grant is building capacity at UW-Platteville that will facilitate its partnership with ARS as a LTAR site.
