Research Project: Development of Novel Grasses for Use in Temperate Growing Environments

Location: Forage and Range Research

2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this cooperative research project is to develop novel pasture and turf grass germplasm and technologies that enable more efficient selection for value added traits.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Collaborative experiments will be designed and implemented either in the field or laboratory for the evaluation of novel forage and turf grass germplasm by the Forage and Range Research Laboratory, Logan, UT, USA (hereinafter FRRL), and Sichuan Agriculture University, Yaan City, Sichuan Province, China (hereafter SAU). Evaluations will include but are not limited to field measurements of forage yield, forage quality, turf quality, abiotic stress tolerance, and seed production. Laboratory evaluations will be conducted at FRRL or SAU that includes: 1) the assessment of molecular marker or DNA sequence relatedness; 2) elucidation of genetic mechanisms behind value-added traits (e.g., flowering time, forage quality, and abiotic stress tolerance), and; 3) tests to define the association of markers and traits of economic importance.

3. Progress Report:
In late 2012 and early 2013, a plan was conceived to have a 2013 U.S./Sino Grass Alliance meeting at Harbin, China, where a meeting would be help with all alliance members (10) to discuss on-going research and develop plans for more cooperative research efforts among Chinese institutions. A visiting scholar from SAU trained at the FRRL for two years, assisting in genetic mapping of late flowering traits in orchardgrass. These activities were designed to allow for training of Chinese scientists by FRRL scientists in data collection and for assessment of trial plots for future data collection. These planned activities did not come to fruition because of USDA travel restrictions and congressionally instituted budget rescissions in which travel to this meeting by FRRL personal could not be accommodated. A similar meeting will be planned in 2014, which will seek to reach the objectives of the meeting planned in 2013.
