Research Project: Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) Funding

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-028-60-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2013
End Date: Jun 30, 2015

The specific goal of this agreement is the evaluation of the soil moisture products that will be provided by the Soil Moisture Active Passive satellite over its mission life using in situ and other resources developed by the ARS team. These efforts will begin with rehearsal campaigns in 2013 and 2014 that will lead to the development of tools and methodologies and continue through the expected duration of the satellite project. Project support will facilitate the integration of USDA ARS and the project team located at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

An in situ calibration and validation team will be established that consists of scientists and support personnel from USDA ARS (Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory) and the Collaborator. The ARS PI will lead this team and coordinate activities at both locations. USDA ARS will participate in both rehearsal campaigns and post-launch evaluation of the satellite products that will assess the quality and reliability of the products for use in agricultural and climate applications.
