Location: Meats Safety & Quality Research2013 Annual Report
1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Validate the efficacy of environmental predictors for determining gross Salmonella contamination in feedlot environments and subsequent lymph node contamination.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
1. Samples will be collected at a feedlot with an established history of Salmonella contamination. 2. Sample types previously determined to be the best predictors of Salmonella environmental and lymph node contamination will be collected. Samples will be collected on entry, at re-implant and at harvest. Eight pens will be targeted for sampling (30% of cattle per pen = target study population: 300 - 450 total cattle sampled in study). 3. Flies will be collected monthly throughout the study and subiliac lymph nodes will be collected at harvest. 4. All samples will be processed for Salmonella enumeration and prevalence. Salmonella isolated may be serotyped, but no PFGE analysis will be performed on any Salmonella isolated.
3. Progress Report:
Sampling for this study was initiated in May 2013. Sample collection will be completed by November 2013 and the final report will be submitted to NCBA in May 2014.
