Investigate the defensive chemistry of native and exotic ants in Mississippi and search new natural toxins for fire ant control.
Many ants coexist with fire ants and some play an important role in suppressing establishment of fire ant colonies. However, how their defensive chemicals affect fire ants has not been well investigated. Ants will be collected from different habitats in Mississippi. Their raw extracts will be evaluated for toxicity against fire ants. Chemical analysis will be performed on positive extracts to determine chemical identities of active components.
