1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
The purpose of the project is to demonstrate to broiler producers nationwide that properly designed Vegetative Environmental Buffers (VEBs) combined with acid scrubbers on exhaust fans will result in dramatic reductions in ammonia, particulate matter (PM), and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Scientists at Fayetteville, AR, will build five ammonia scrubbers developed and patented by the Co-PI. Two scrubbers will be installed at broiler farms in Delaware, two on a farm in Arkansas, and one in Pennsylvania. Ventilation rates and concentrations of ammonia and total suspended particulates will be measured periodically inside the facilities and in exhaust air with and without scrubbers. Nitrogen accumulation in the scrubbers will be quantified, along with the time required for maintenance and operational costs.
3. Progress Report:
This research, which is funded by a Conservation Innovation Grant from USDA/NRCS, is conducted in cooperation with collaborators from University of Delaware, ARS, Oklahoma State University, Penn State University, and Virginia Tech University on the feasibility of using an ammonia scrubber to capture and utilize ammonia emitted from poultry houses as a fertilizer, while reducing aerial emissions of bacteria, dust, and VOCs. Scientists at Fayetteville, AR, are building five ammonia scrubbers for this project. Two scrubbers will be installed at broiler farms in Delaware, two on a farm in Arkansas, and one in Pennsylvania. This year, extensive testing of the scrubbers was conducted. One of the five scrubbers was also constructed. A trailer that our unit obtained after Hurricane Katrina was converted into an instrument trailer and will be moved to a farm in northwest Arkansas where the scrubbers are being tested.
