Eradication of pale cyst nematode by induction of egg hatching without the presence of a suitable host. The nematode juveniles die.
The first approach involves the direct planting of the trap crop of Solanum sisymbriifolium(SS) into the field. The root diffusates stimulate egg hatching while the crop behaves as a non-host and the hatched juveniles die. The SS is beeing breed to reduce spininess. The second approach is to identify egg hatch inducing factors in the roots and foliage and to apply them to soils in a such a way as to induce egg hatching either in a fallow field or in a field planted with a non-host. We will also determine the host sstatus of SS to other common pests and pathogens in the Pacific Northwest.
