Research Project: Bread Wheat Development for North Carolina

Location: Plant Science Research

2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
On-farm testing and proof-of-concept trials for 2012-13 and 2013-14 wheat growing seasons for newly-developed bread wheat cultivars.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Plant, maintain, examine, and harvest drill-strip size experiments on growers farms using standard varieties and newly-developed bread wheat cultivars.

3. Progress Report:
This research relates directly to inhouse objective to develop wheats having bread-making quality, resistance to soilborne viruses, and freezing tolerance for North Carolina. Over 500 newly developed wheat lines for North Carolina were evaluated and selected for improved virus resistance and freeze tolerance. These lines were increased in the field and will be tested in 2014. PI confers with the sponsor by phone, email and in person. A research planning and results meeting is held in-person during August. A field day is arranged for the sponsor each tear to jointly evaluate wheat lines in the field.
