2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Develop geospatial (geographic information system (GIS) and Remote Sensing) and database technology to identify and characterize different sources of waters and sediments at laboratory, field, and watershed scales.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Tasks to be performed on a ongoing basis during the term of this agreement: a) Develop and utilize remote sensing technology and geographic information system (GIS) databases to determine the onset and evolution of erosion sources, particularly for gullies on upland areas, to allow simulations with watershed models. b) Investigate remote sensing methods for characterization of climate, sheet and rill, gullies, and conservation practices for assessment with the Annualized Agricultural Non-Point Source Pollution Model (AnnAGNPS) watershed model in reducing water and sediment loads.

3. Progress Report:
Development of technology to assess ephemeral gully erosion processes was incorporated within the Annualized Agricultural Non-Point Source Pollution model (AnnAGNPS). Datasets were developed for the Conservation Evaluation and Assessment Program (CEAP)-Benchmark Goodwin Creek Watershed for identification of existing gullies and runoff and sediment loads. Precipitation and runoff data collected from the Goodwin Creek Watershed were also used in the simulations. Evaluations were made on the effect of conservation practices on erosion from sheet and rill and gully sources. Additional CEAP watersheds were identified for further evaluation of gully erosion sources.
