To obtain transcriptomic date of various Phakopsora pachyrhizi isolates during infection and from germinating urediniospores.
Advances in nucleic acid sequencing technologies (i.e., "next generation" sequencing) provide a fast and cost-effective way to analyze gene expression. In this study, plants infected with Phakopsora pachyrhizi (Asian soybean rust) and ungerminated P. pachyrhizi urediniospores will be used as the source of the RNA. Next generation sequencing protocols will be used to identify the RNA transcripts present in the samples. The resulting sequence data will be provided to USDA-ARS for the study of genes important for fungal virulence and the triggering of plant defense responses.
