Cooperation with greenhouse and field work in species identification and propagation of barberry hybrids and populations for rust testing.
Natural hybridization between Berberis spp. occurs in the United States New England area. Observations have been made there regarding segregation in morphological traits on progeny derived from the natural hybrids. This may lead to the natural occurrence of stem rust susceptible progeny if these hybrids are grown in regulated states by way of natural occurance or through the commercial sales of ornamental plants. Scientists in Connecticut have collected and derived progeny plants. This project will further propagation and transportion of plants to be tested for stem rust susceptibility at the Cereal Disease Laboratory.
