The objective of this agreement is to determine the effect of berry anthocyanins on fecal microbiota and, in turn, to determine the effect of fecal microbiota on colonic metabolism of unabsorbed anthocyanins.
The approach will be to conduct a human feeding study in which volunteers consume blackberries as part of a controlled diet. Blood, urine, and fecal samples will be analyzed for a variety of biochemical markers related to cancer risk. Feces will be characterized for microbiota. Analyses will include appearance of nutrients in the blood/urine, markers of inflammation, DNA damage, gene expression epigenetic markers, and metabolomics.
