1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Compile national data on soils, topography and climate in support of regional and national Grazing Lands CEAP objectives, specifically development of site type classification and simulation modeling efforts.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
These funds will be used to hire a GS-05 temporary technician to obtain and process soils, topography and climate data from UGSG and other sources in support of the research needs of Grazing Lands CEAP. The GIS database developed will be used by scientists at University Park, PA; Mandan, ND; El Reno, OK; and Tifton, GA for development of site type classifications and simulation modeling of conservation practices in pastures at the farm and watershed scales. This work supports the Grazing Lands CEAP pasture objectives for 2012 by facilitating modeling efforts using RHEM and other models.
3. Progress Report:
A technician has been hired, and is in the process of acquiring and organizing geographic data including: soils [Soil Survey Georgraphic Database (SSURGO) and new gridded Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) information], topography (10m and 30m digital elevation models), bedrock geology, watershed, land cover/use, census, road and political boundaries, and detailed climate averages and daily data. Initial focus has been on the northeastern United States, but data compilation is expanding to encompass other core CEAP locations, and eventually the entire continental US. Additionally, the USDA NASS National Agricultural Census data for the region of interest have been collected and imported into a relational database for further analyses. These data have already been used to support site type delineation and modeling efforts, and additionally as a basis for food systems, regional species bioclimatic modeling, and remote sensing initiatives.
