Location: Pasture Systems & Watershed Management Research

Project Number: 8070-13000-012-17-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2012
End Date: Dec 31, 2015

This project will provide foundational research that develops a novel approach to validating and refining state Phosphorus (P) Indices so that they comply with NRCS National Nutrient Management Policy and guidance. This agreement will accelerate efforts aimed at addressing NRCS nutrient management priorities through modeling and collaboration with groups around the USA to ensure that P-Index tools adequately assess the risk of phosphorus loss and are calibrated and validated for local use in a coordinated and systematic fashion.

We will compile watershed and field data from Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) watersheds in the three regions leading national efforts to revise the P Index (Chesapeake, Heartland, Southern States). Using monitoring data and process modeling, we will test existing P Indices and provide a foundation for testing future revisions to these Indices. We will coordinate with members of SERA-17 and NRCS to ensure a consistent approach to testing and validating the P Index.
