1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
The goal of the study is to quantify the effect of wetland restoration techniques on carbon storage and hydromorphology.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Study sites will be selected throughout the MIAR to best characterize the effect of wetland restoration implementation practices on the provision of ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration. The cooperator will travel to each site to assess soil characteristics and retrieve soil samples. The cooperator will work with ARS and other participants to analyze the data within the context of ecosystem service delivery.
3. Progress Report:
Previous work culminated in the production of a Masters student thesis and a manuscript has been produced for submission to a peer reviewed journal. New field sites have been established. Field data have been collected, processed, and initially analyzed to characterize the influence of hydrology, restoration age, and restoration practices on soil morphology, organic carbon decomposition, and carbon storage. Efforts are being made to foster collaboration on the development of a conceptual model and process based models pertaining to soil carbon dynamics.
