This research is designed to: 1) Refine digestible and metabolizable energy (DE and ME, respectively) values for dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) ranging in fat content from 5 to 14%; 2) Validate DE and ME prediction equations determined for DDGS of varying fat content that are currently being determined in 2 funded projects (Minnesota Corn Research & Promotion Council and POET); 3) Determine the net energy (NE) content in these same DDGS sources, and 4) Validate NE in a commercial setting.
To conduct this research at an industry location, only 1 DDGS source will be utilized which will be the DDGS with lowest level of crude fat that we can get at the start of the trial. Even though we will be evaluating 12, 9, and 6% crude fat in the “university” trial, we need to focus on the product that will be largely available to the industry, which we speculate will be in the 6% crude fat level. Based upon results of our ongoing experimentation, the exact level will be determined by Drs. Kerr and Shurson within 3 months prior to project initiation. Also, due to the need for adequate replication, limitation in industry research capability, and the cost of the trial, we determined that only 1 DDGS level will be feasible. The swine industry would then need to adjust NE relative to the NE:ME (or NE:DE) relative to this source as adjusted relative to a predicted or determined DE or ME of different DDGS products. Assuming 3 barns with 1,100 head each barn, we would need approximately 130,000 pounds of DDGS (3,300 head x 7#/hd/d x 28 d x 20% average DDGS inclusion). Storage will be by bulk bins at the research location or on 3 semi-trailers. Three DDGS inclusion levels will be utilized as at the proposed research facility, 4 bulk bins are available. With 48 pens being available, 3 DDGS levels will be used, with the highest level predicted to not dramatically affect pig performance or carcass composition. In discussions with Dr. Bart Borg it was suggested that 40% would be the maximum level, thus with evenly spaced levels, 0, 13, 26, and 39% DDGS will be used. The trial will last 28 days, from approximately 90 to 120 kg BW. Diets will be formulated for 1 phase only, lasting 28 days. How to account for the 35% CP that’s in DDGS versus the 15% that was in midds in Dean’s abstract where it appeared that midds were exchanged for increments of corn and aa only, is still being considered. Titanium will be used as a marker so we can obtain feces from each pen (grab sample, pooled by pen) and evaluate digestible energy, fat, and fiber to predict dietary DE, ME, and NE using Danish or French equations. The “Boyd” method only evaluates GF and no carcass parameters. In our opinion, we should get yield and/or lean data from the plant (Farmland utilizing Fat-O-Meter), and if that is not possible, then pigs could be sent to a smaller plant (Sioux-Preme Pork) to obtain such data. The trial will start approximately December, 2012. The trial will be conducted at a single Smithfield location in Iowa. Because Smithfield has the staff to conduct this type of research, administration of the project by Brian Kerr will be minimal in nature. At this site there are 3 barns, with each barn having 48 pens and 24 pigs/pen.
